It has been 10 years since I attended my first Much Music Video Awards, and it isn't just me who has changed over the years. Something has changed with the whole industry since the days where it was my friends and I who were the first kids inline to make sure we got our wristbands marked "PLOT". We could show up the night before wristband give away, be the first kids in line, stay up all night and order pizza, and it was a blast. Then the weekend of the MMVAs would come, and we would wake up early and come down and watch all the rehearsals, stand outside the back entrance and meet the artists while they were coming in and out, then the day of, put on our cutest outfits, dance in the crowd for our favourite bands, then spend the night trying to sneek (usually successfully) into the after parties. Every year this was the weekend I looked forward to more then anything. To my friends, this was OUR weekend. So many memories, from meeting Lady Gaga to Fergie to The Used, to Hillary Duff and Avril and Maroon 5 and BSB, to feeling so proud when my friends in illScarlett performed on the roof, right after a massive storm wiped out the red carpet show. The MMVAs have changed. The artists have become repetitive, I mean, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Hedley Boys... but they have performed the last like 10000 years in a row. The red carpet show used to take up all of Queen Street, and was a massive event, and is now confined to a small space crammed behind the john street stage and is an edited hour show instead of a live event. Standing on the street is now organized like cattle..and yes, while it is probably done for safety reasons... it kinda sucks. The same excitement that I would feel, even 5 years ago is gone. If you want to meet your favourite artist you now have to stand way across the street and HOPE that they come out and run across the street to meet you. I feel like the whole thing has become inaccessible and predictable. Much Music used to be a place I could go to get close to musicians, that played music videos, supported music and had shows such as Live@Much and MOD... and now their station is filled with crap. Its not even worth turning on as every show is pretty much old sitcoms or garbage mtv reject shows. No wonder they are having trouble filling the streets for the MMVAs, why should fans AND artists, support a station that doesn't support them anymore? This year the fans were out in honestly, record lows. The street wasn't packed, there wasn't crowds of kids outback waiting to see their faves leaving rehearsals, there was a totally different vibe. I am disappointed. I grew up with Much Music and I feel like it has lost the thing that made it so special to me and my friends. I feel sorry for the high school kids that won't get to feel the excitement that I did 10 years ago when I got to meet the Backstreet Boys because of Much Music. I wish that they would bring back the music, and the fan interaction and the days when Much was about the MUSIC and not just about filler. Maybe I am just getting old, but I hope that it changes next year. I want the fireworks and confetti back. It was so sad to me when the MMVAs ended and you would have never noticed. There was no fireworks, no confetti, no hosts on stage.. nothing. It just ended. This year was also the 25th Much Music Video Awards, and I feel like SOMETHING should have been done to make it even more special... and nothing. Hopefully they come back with a bang next year and step it up again, but who knows. A girl can dream, but at this point.. I am not going to hold my breathe... so until next year. Its a wrap.
