It was hot and the Molson Canadian Ampitheatre was sold out last Saturday Night as Seattle Grunge Rockers SOUNDGARDEN took the stage for the 1st show of their 1st tour as a band in 14 years. The band has reunited and has only played a few shows (including last years Lollapollza) but this is the first major arena tour for the band. Lead Singer Chris Cornell came out centre stage, and I actually felt like it was 1994 again. Unshaven with long hair, it was like he hadn't aged. I have actually met Chris back a few years ago, and he was much better looking clean shaven.
About Midway through the show the impending storm hit, lightening and rain soaked the crowd out in the 400s and lawns, but the fans didnt seem to care!
The stage set up with simple, lights and a banner that changed once in a while was all that was on the stage other then the 4 members, and that is how it should be. Rock shows are about the music and SOUNDGARDEN delivered. Although I personally don't know many songs from the band, (during their time I was about 7), I still managed to have a blast at the show! Everywhere I looked there were people of all ages rocking out. To my left was a guy about my age who seriously played air guitar for the whole two hours. To my left was on playing air drums the whole night.
Chris did a great job interacting with the crowd, saying that Toronto was the perfect place to start the tour, making the already loud crowd errupt into even louder screams. At another point in time he pointed out a young male fan who he told the crowd mouthed "I love you" to him. "It was a nice manly moment between us", Cornell said. Overall, despite the rainstorms and uber scary lightening that almost killed us after the show, I had a blast, and it was the perfect way to kick off a summer of concerts for myself at the Molson Amp!
